Impressions of Sonic Unleashed

In a sentence, Sonic Unleashed will fail. I would like to direct your attention to Exhibit A. Now many people may feel differently, but let me pose this question to you: does Sonic Unleashed look fun?

So far, Sonic Team has shown us two seperate trailers of the nextattempt to revive Sonic from his three dimensional grave. Well, I suppose they've shown us one, the internet found the other. These trailers have minuscule differences, but I'd suggest viewing both. The official debut trailer is a bit more polished and shows a bit more gameplay, but the leaked trailer gives us a first glance at the HUD, UI, or to be more specific, your rings, lives, time, etc..

Now onto my reasoning. Do this game look fun? No, no, no. Maybe you misheard me. I didn't ask if it looked cool, does it look fun? These two ideas can be, and I believe in this case, are, completely unrelated. And unfortunately, Sonic Team didn't realize this when creating Sonic Unleashed.

This game looks cool no doubt. Impressive graphics for Sonic, great camera angles, fast-paced gameplay, and plenty more useless things not dealing with gameplay. So will it be fun? From what we've seen, hell no. You hold a direction, hit jump a few times, and that's about it. It's like the game plays itself. Let me ask you the last time you've enjoyed watching something play with itself? And this question excludes porn, you pervs.

Where's the platforming, where's the skill, where's the real Sonic, where's the fun? So far, no where I can see. But who knows, with only two trailers out, and no release date in sight, there's still hope.

If you want to get a taste of what Sonic should be like, pick up your Genesis and go to town, or play the next best thing.

EDIT: Man do I feel stupid.  Next time, more research is needed.  Destructoid seems to have beat me to the punch being the retro fanboys there are, and found the official press release announcing the game.  And Sonic Team has stated "New combat, movement, functional abilities and platforming will be introduced to offer increased depth and variety."

So to conclude, I'm excited now.
